Discipline in one area is discipline everywhere:

People who stick to an exercise program for two months report reducing their impulsive spending, junk food intake, alcohol use and smoking. They also study more, watch less television and do more housework.

I like the article and believe the conclusion, but I wonder how valid the conclusions are given so many confounding factors.

For instance they say that working out for 2 months leads to greater discipline in other areas... like spending, tv watching, studying, chores etc.

Couldn't it also be true that working out for 2 months is an effect of getting rid of the tv... or even of studying... perhaps the person read a book which encouraged him/her to go hit the weights? Or maybe they were spending all their time getting buff... which prevented them from shopping.

Either way, discipline is good... just letting my stream of conscious flow :-)

That seemed more like wishful thinking and hypothesizing then any actual science. The experiments mix up will power with being duped into doing tedious tasks more then once.

Perhaps a more in depth report would be convincing, but I'm not buying the snake oil after that pitch.
